When it comes to creating new products, services, business models and the like or developing existing ones as well as problem solving, we need to generate ideas and think about possible solutions. However, we are often getting stuck when trying to come up with something new and innovative as humans naturally try to think in a logical way. More creative ways of thinking may help to generate ideas we would not have conceived when sticking to our usual thinking patterns. There are hundreds of creative thinking techniques out there that require a rather lateral way of thinking. If they are applied in the right manner, they provide efficient support to problem solving as well as idea generation and development.
Before delving into the differences between vertical and lateral thinking as well as several creative thinking techniques, let me start with some interesting thoughts on creativity of Isaac Asimov, a well-known American Science Fiction author and professor of biochemistry at the Boston University.
